Dreams Update Adds Dungeon Crawler, Revamped UI

Dreams has been going strong since its release and being supported continually. Projects such as Dreams VR were announced and released last July, with the Made in Dreams project announced this July.

Now the latest Dreams update includes the already-announced Ancient Dangers: A Bat’s Tale, which is a third-person dungeon crawler made by Media Molecule and “designed to test the skills of only the bravest adventurers.” It’s exclusively available to play in Dreams, with the game offering frantic combat, strange and silly foes, puzzles, and a showdown against a dragon with big teeth and an even bigger ego.

The story goes that Scoria and Gabbro need to find a herb to cure their grandmother’s horrible snoring. During the story, players will also discover if their wise-cracking bat friend will find his way home and how a dragon learned the noble art of floristry. That last one is kind of an oxymoron, eh?

Players will be able to play as Scoria, a heroic orc, or play with a friend as Scoria’s twin, Gabbro in local co-op mode. However, you won’t be able to play offline, as the local co-op mode must be played online. Players will also be able to challenge themselves to ascend to the top of the leaderboards by fighting enemies and activating their Berserk chain to maximize your points.

Along with Ancient Dangers: A Bat’s Tale, there are five new imps based on the characters added to the game, but that’s small potatoes compared to the massive DreamShaping overhaul added in this latest Dreams update.

What else is included in the Dreams update?

The new DreamShaping overhaul has a new template system that will make it easier for new players to get started. The templates make it easier to make a 2D platformer, a dungeon crawler, a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up, mini-golf, and more, which includes a dedicated template for Ancient Dangers: A Bat’s Tale that comes with a kit “for your creative delectation.”

There will be objectives and pointers that will guide players and explain the process. If you get stuck you can go to this page for any support or help you might require.

The DreamShaping UI has also been changed so players now have an overview page for each template from the Start Creating screen. Check it out:

The template difficulty is indicated on the page. Beginner templates will help players get used to the idea of creating by letting players stamp in elements. Medium-difficulty templates introduce players to the concept of wiring things together, while advanced templates teach players how to optimize their games.

There are also new sections that will allow players to promote high-quality elements to use in their creations as well as award-winning and high-level Dreams creators that you can stalk follow. There are also help pages that link to online support via QR codes if you like doing that sort of thing.

Your personal DreamShaping page in-game will now be tailored to you based on the time you’ve spent creating in-game. So, if you’re a new player you’ll see things that help you get acquainted with creating in Dreams. If you have more experience you’ll see curated recommendations for “some of the best building blocks the community has to offer.”
