Players of a certain generation might remember one of the longest running MMORPGs in the business: Runescape. The version most players are familiar with, sometimes referred to as Runescape 3, debuted in 2001 by Wales-based developer Jagex, and is still receiving new content to this day. Thanks to this twenty years of support, its an MMO experience packed with interesting lore and even a community divided between Old School and Modern players. Now, thanks to a partnership with Steamforged Games, Runescape board games are on their way.
In an official press release, Steamforged Games announced that they would be working on two Runescape board games. The first will be an official tabletop RPG released to retail. It will be compatible with the Fifth Edition OGL, the same system the current version of Dungeons and Dragons uses, and will allow players to make characters, explore Runescape’s world of Gielinor, and create unique quests. Considering the world of Gielinor contains absurd events like the antics of The Order of the Cabbage to fan favorite quests like One Piercing Note, there will be plenty to draw on for both players and Gamemasters alike.
The second will be a traditional Runescape board game. One to five players will make a character, improve their skills, make gear, cook special recipes, and test their skills as they go from different regions of the world, partaking in side quests along the way. This board game will be part of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, allowing for the community to have some say in the production of the game through things like stretch goals and direct feedback.
When it comes to why partner with Steamforged Games for Runescape board games, the CEO of Jagex, Phil Mansell said the following: ““After more than 21 years of being exclusively available digitally, it’s extremely exciting to be collaborating with Steamforged to create and deliver new RuneScape role-playing adventures to tabletop gamers. By launching the board game via a crowdfunding platform, Steamforged is mirroring our approach of involving the RuneScape communities in taking the game to tabletop. Given Steamforged’s experience and expertise in transforming video game experiences to tabletop, I’m sure that both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape players will be excited to get their hands on the planned miniatures to create their own adventures with other ’Scapers and board gamers.” Considering that Steamforged Games has experience adapting video game properties into tabletop experiences with Dark Souls: The Card Game, Devil May Cry: The Bloody Palace, and the successfully crowdfunded Monster Hunter board game, it makes sense for them to undertake such a project.
The Runescape Tabletop RPG is slated to release some time in 2022 with the Kickstarter for the board game going live around the same time.
