Muv-Luv publisher aNCHOR launched a collaboration with subculture café & bar NewType Shinjuku in Tokyo, and it’s one that fans of the popular visual novel series will likely love.
The collaboration cafe is open now and will be available until April 23, so if you happen to go to Japan to enjoy the cherry blossoms season, you’ll still be in time to visit.
It’s open from Monday to Friday between 5 pm and 11 pm, and on weekends and holidays from 11 am to 11 pm. If you need directions, you can check out the official site or simply Google Maps.
At the cafe, you’ll be able to enjoy food and drinks inspired by the games of the Muv-Luv series on top of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (which many westerners know with the English title of the dedicated anime, Rumbling Hearts).
Accompanying the opening of the cafe, we have a comment (and an invitation) from Muv-Luv Series’ executive brand producer Kazutoshi “Tororo” Matsumura.
“Hi, it’s me, Muv-Luv’s executive brand producer tororo!
We’re doing a collaboration cafe with NewType Shinjuku to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Muv-Luv’s release!
It’s happening until 4/23, so stop in if you’re making a trip to Japan, and recommend it to your friends who are here!”
Among the drinks you can find gems like Yuuko-sensei’s hot coffee and tea… and they’re served in her signature beakers. If you love Total Eclipse you can enjoy Polestar’s Gimlet or Cryska’s Treasured Victory Party Vodka. Fans of best girl Mitsuki Hayase will be able to taste the straight whiskey she likes to enjoy at home. If your Muv-Luv preference leans more toward the European Front of Alternative Chronicles Adoration, Dover Base PX’s Synthetic Banana au Lait may be more your jam.
You can check out the full menu below.
If you’d rather fill your stomach, you may be tempted by Deep-Fried Synthetic Whale Meat, Mitsuki’s Special Chicken Curry, Sumika & Kasumi’s Homemade Hamburg Steak, or The Takoyaki That Takuyuki Bought for Ayu at the Festival. That being said, my favorite has to be the Mitsurugi Family Purple Sweet Potato Kintsuba.
Any order will net you a random coaster among the many available, while you’ll get an A4 lunch mat for every 2,000 yen spent.
Last, but not least, you can also purchase original merchandise including can badges and acrylic keychains featuring the series’ characters in their adorable SD looks with the cafe’s outfits.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Muv-Luv series, it’s widely considered one of the best (if not the best) visual novel series of all time (even Bing agrees albeit it obviously can’t get past the PTSD), mixing a tragic and romantic story with one of the best and deepest sci-fi isekai worlds ever written. Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien actually came before, but it’s part of the same universe, set in the same school as the first Muv-Luv visual novel.
Most Muv-Luv visual novels are currently available in English on Steam (while Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative have also been released on PS Vita) alongside the early access action game Project MIKHAIL: A Muv-Luv War Story, while an official localization of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien is finally in the works.
Below you can find some more pictures of the cafe and its offerings, on top of the decor, including the Deep-Fried Synthetic Whale Meat set, Sumika & Kasumi’s Homemade Hamburg Steak, Dover Base PX’s Synthetic Banana au Lait, and more. The pictures were provided by aNCHOR’s own Adam Lensenmayer.
