DCS World Introduces Multi-threading Support in New Beta Update

DCS World developer Eagle Dynamics launched a new open beta update for its military flight simulator introducing a rather relevant change.

The update adds multi-threading support, promising improvements in performance for those who have high-core count CPUs, which previously weren’t well-utilized by the simulator.

This is a major change because DCS World can be very taxing on the CPU due to the fact that many engagements can saturate quickly with launched weapons the trajectory of which relies on CPU calculations, on top of the AI, and, of course, the advanced simulation, physics, and avionics.

Being able to utilize all the cores of a modern CPU is definitely not trivial, and my Intel i7-13700K saw a significant performance uplift (measured in tens of frames-per-second).

Utilizing the new features requires the download of the latest open beta version and the use of a dedicated executable. It’s all explained in a FAQ published by Eagle Dynamic itself. That being said, if you’re having performance issues in DCS World or would simply like a boost, and you have a decent CPU, you may want to give this a try and see how it tracks for you.

Of course, do keep in mind that this is a beta, so you may encounter some bugs.

DCS World is currently available only for PC and the base simulator can be downloaded for free (properly “free” in this case) either via the developer’s own site or Steam. If you’d like to see more, you can also enjoy the trailer teasing what Eagle Dynamics has in store for 2023 and beyond. In the meanwhile, another popular developer, Heatblur, is preparing to launch the F-4E Phantom and working on the Eurofighter Typhoon, while Razban is getting ready to release the early access of the F-15E Strike Eagle
