Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s first-party studio Pixelopus announced that it’s going to be shut down.
The announcement, made on Twitter, reads as follows, accompanied by a cute illustration of the developer’s characters:
“Dear friends, our PixelOpus adventure has come to an end. As we look to new futures, we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to the millions of passionate players who have supported us, and our mission to make beautiful, imaginative games with heart. We are so grateful!”
The tweet was followed by multiple posts by Pixelopus’ developers mourning the studio’s closure. At the moment, we don’t know whether they will be relocated to other positions within Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The team was rumored to be working on a game in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, but the source of that information was a career opportunity ad. Unfortunately, many of the games mentioned in that kind of ads end up not seeing the light, and this appears to be the case here.
Pixelopus was founded in 2014 in San Mateo, California, with Dominic Robilliard at the helm. It released Entwined in the same year, followed by Concrete Genie in 2019. Its games were a great example of hyper-creative and charming titles that broke the mold of PlayStation’s usual blockbuster fare.
This is the second PlayStation Studios team closed in the past few years after Sony Interactive Entertainment decided to close Japan Studio in 2021.
