For several months, Terraria fans have had one question on their minds: when is Terraria 1.4 coming to Switch? Happily, today brings an answer to that question. The Terraria 1.4 Switch update, otherwise known as Journey’s End, launches today, bringing 1000 new items (yes, really), new bosses, and more.
What is the Terraria 1.4 Switch update adding to the game?
The Terraria Journey’s End Switch release date was originally announced back in November last year. Now it’s finally here, and it’s bringing most of the content from the PC release back in May 2020. That means you’re getting more than 1000 new items, which brings the total count in Terraria to more than 5000 items. Two new game modes have been added: Journey Mode, which aims to make Terraria more accessible, and Master Mode, which is a hardcore experience intended for serious Terraria players. You can check out a trailer showing off some of the Terraria 1.4 Switch features right here.
There’s a whole host more content in the new Terraria Switch update, of course. The devs say they’ve done a “full rebalance pass” on all of the content in the game, resulting in changes to stats, item functionality, and much more. You’ll also find new NPC happiness systems, new construction options, and even the ability to play golf. It’s hard to imagine anyone who wouldn’t be satisfied by the sheer amount of stuff the devs have included in this Terraria update. You can check out the full changelog right here.
Will this be the final Terraria update?
Even though developer Re-Logic says that Journey’s End represents a point at which the core Terraria experience can “finally be called complete”, this certainly isn’t the end for the game. For one thing, Terraria has actually received several other patches since 1.4 launched. The most recent of these is 1.4.3, which adds some Don’t Starve Together-themed content to the game, as well as new items, a new boss, and more. Re-Logic says it’s now going to work on bringing the Switch version up to parity with the current PC version, which is 1.4.3, so keep an eye out for the features outlined above and more in future content updates.
There are also several features missing from the Terraria 1.4 Switch version. These include modding and texture packs, crossplay, keyboard and mouse controls, and more. Re-Logic says they’ll be looking into a number of these items, including Bluetooth multiplayer and a splitscreen-online combo system, in future updates. That means you’ll definitely be getting more content updates for Terraria, so rest assured, this is very much not the end for Re-Logic’s 2D sandbox crafting sim. You can grab Terraria on Nintendo Switch right now via the eShop. It’s also available on PS4 (and PS5 via backwards compatibility), Xbox consoles, and PC, as well as mobile devices.
