New D&D Honor Among Thieves Trailer Shows Practical Dragons And New Characters

A new D&D Honor Among Thieves trailer has dropped. The latest attempt at a live-action film of the world’s most popular TTRPG has had its share of ups and downs. The most recent trailer was packed with references and lore that delighted older fans. The main cast is full of recognizable and likable Hollywood stars. It even confronted a monster that slays most D&D adventuring parties: scheduling delays. While the newest trailer does provide a few precious moments of new footage, it also showcases something rarely seen in modern movies: practical special effects.

It was quick, but we saw it.

The new D&D Honor Among Thieves trailer

The new D&D Honor Among Thieves trailer went live on Paramount Pictures’ official YouTube channel. Overall, the two-minute-long trailer features mostly re-used footage from the first trailer released in July. Interspersed throughout that footage are new segments where the main cast and lead writers talk about the appeal of D&D, their characters, and some brief behind-the-scenes banter.

As for brand new material in the D&D Honor Among Thieves trailer, there are a few parts to highlight. The trailer does confirm that the red-robed cultists seen in the prior trailer are Faerun’s most notorious arcane organization: The Red Wizards of Thay. In addition, there are brief glimpses of various player species such as the avian aarakocra and the snakelike yuan-ti. But arguably the biggest surprise in the trailer was a few precious seconds of footage showcasing practical special effects. We get a brief look at an elaborate animatronic of a dragon head as well as on-set footage of a large fishlike creature.

Just from the footage shown, this obviously means that D&D Honor Among Thieves isn’t a 100% practical effects production. However, it does mean the filmmakers and film viewers won’t have to completely navigate constant ongoing digital computer-generated effects for their high fantasy spectacle.
