Skullgirls 2nd Encore Has Big Plans For 2023

If you’re a Skullgirls 2nd Encore fan, you’ll have a lot to look forward to in 2023 with two new characters, a new stage, balance and story mode updates, and a massive Nintendo Switch patch. The game is also coming back to Xbox platforms after a 9-year hiatus, which goes to show that after all the shenanigans over the last decade, the game is still only just getting back on track.

Speaking of new content, Black Dahlia will be releasing in full next year, although she’s already available in alpha form if you have the Skullgirls: Season 1 Pass on Steam. A big update is also coming out this week that will include Black Dahlia being fully animated and voiced, 3 new moves to complete her kit, balance adjustments, and a new stage in The Bunny Burrow. If you like the new stage’s theme, Down The Rabbit Hole, then you can listen to it right now as well as hearing it in the stage. There are also 10 new palette options that will let you choose your favorite version of the character.

The full Black Dahlia release will include a new “murderous” story mode for the character, another balance pass, more palettes, tutorials, and an alternate voice pack. She’ll be available as standalone DLC outside of the Season 1 Pass as well, which is nice.

Skullgirls update includes many Black Dahlia Palettes to choose from.
There are plenty of styles to choose from for Black Dahlia.

The second character you’ll be getting next year, Marie, is on track for releasing in 2023, and will also be receiving a story mode. Other characters will be getting in on the fun too, with full voice acting eventually coming to all Season 1 character story modes. You can expect to see some balance adjustments sometime next year; they’ll arrive when they can “be the center of attention with minimal distractions”, which could, according to the devs, even be before Marie’s alpha stage begins.

As for consoles, Nintendo Switch players will be getting a massive update that will make load times twice as fast, improve performance, make the UI sharper, and smoothen out online play. It’s a fighting game, after all, and if the online isn’t good then why bother, eh?

Skullgirls will also be coming back next year to Xbox platforms, with an Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S release next year. Inevitably, the Xbox 360 version will not be updated, which, while sad, is to be expected.
