GitHub co-founder Chris Wanstrath has announced that he’s moving into indie game publishing. Wanstrath’s new studio, Null Games, is part of what he’s calling a “new wave of indie game publishers that put developers first”, and its first project is already in the pipeline.
Per a press release, Null Games will be a “healthier, more sustainable game development environment”. Wanstrath says his goal is to treat the folks behind game development equitably; he wants to help studios “make better games in a more sustainable manner” and rally against the crunch employed by major projects like The Callisto Protocol and Lego Star Wars.
According to Wanstrath, this won’t be so different to his work with GitHub. Before the platform came along, Wanstrath says the story in software development “wasn’t so different” to that faced by game developers right now. The introduction of GitHub and other tools changed this by “focusing exclusively on the developer experience”, and that’s what Wanstrath wants to achieve in game publishing.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Null Games’ first project is a somewhat experimental indie up-and-comer. Tape to Tape is a “roguelite hockey game”, according to developer Excellent Rectangle. You’ll need to make careful decisions about players, team strategies, and abilities if you want to build the ultimate hockey team and restore hockey’s “former glory”.
Tape to Tape is due out sometime in 2023. We might not get a release date announcement imminently. Since Wanstrath and Null Games say they want to change the paradigm and put developers first, it’s likely they don’t want to rush Excellent Rectangle into announcing a date it’s not ready to commit to. Still, if you’re interested in the sound of the project, then you can wishlist Tape to Tape on Steam right now. Stay tuned to TechRaptor for more news about Null Games and other promising indie publishing ventures.
