The Serpent and the Sands Announced For Achtung! Cthulhu

The world of Achtung! Cthulhu is returning to North Africa. Modiphius Entertainment’s pulpy cosmic horror TTRPG depicts an alternate history where the Allies of World War II fought a secret war against two different secret Axis organizations as they attempt to weaponize the Great Old Ones to win the war. It has been adapted into several TTRPG systems, starting with Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu, and moving to Savage Worlds, Fate Core, and Modiphius’ 2D20 system. It’s also not the only alternate-history take on Cthulhu. But this new expansion, The Serpent and the Sands, marks a change in support for the TTRPG since it will provide material for both players and GMs in a single book.

The Serpent and the Sands for Achtung! Cthulhu

According to an official post on Modiphius’ website, The Serpent and the Sands is both a guidebook and a campaign for Achtung! Cthulhu. This is important because past supplements for the pulpy horror TTRPG have always been separated into two groups. Guides would contain information about the setting as well as new player options. Whereas campaigns are prewritten adventures full of key information meant entirely for GMs.

But this doesn’t mean either part will be slimmed down. The Serpent and the Sands is roughly 280 pages thick, with the guide section detailing the North Africa region, complete with briefs, adventure seeds, bases, and locations for all major factions. The highlight of the guide however is a double-page map and guide to the top secret “Adlerhorst” Eagle’s Nest in Tunisia. As for player options, they include things like adventurer, gambler, and diplomat as well as region-specific characteristics and talents. FInally, the guide will include new Heroes, Villains, support NPCs, vehicles, and weapons.

As for the campaign in The Serpent and the Sands, it is a substantive one. It is a ten-part campaign that will take players from Alexandria to Cairo via Tobruk, visiting forgotten temples and uncovering a sinister plot connected to the ancient Ophidian Empire.
