Frictional Games has announced that Amnesia: The Bunker, the upcoming fourth installment in the Amnesia series of horror games, is being delayed by two weeks. The game was originally slated to arrive on May 23rd, but it’s now set for June 6th after the devs encountered some unusual errors during certification.
Speaking via Twitter, Frictional’s Fredrik Olsson elaborated on the reason for this Amnesia: The Bunker delay. According to Olsson, the game is currently going through the certification process, which is when the game is tested to ensure it doesn’t have any critical bugs or crashes before release. Olsson says Frictional has encountered multiple “rare” crashes that are “very difficult to identify, reproduce, and thereby also fix”, and so the May 23rd release date is no longer viable.
Olsson says that the alternative to delaying the game would have been to ask the Frictional team to work weekends or nights, but this is “simply not something” the studio does. In an industry currently grappling with crunch at even the highest levels, that’s a refreshing attitude to see.
There is a silver lining to this delay announcement, though. Olsson says that “very soon”, a demo should be released on Steam for Amnesia: The Bunker, giving you the chance to play “parts of the game”. He doesn’t specify which parts of the game the demo will contain, but it’s arriving on May 22nd, just one day before Amnesia: The Bunker was originally scheduled to launch.
Amnesia: The Bunker is set for release on PC, Xbox consoles, and PS4 (although not PS5, curiously) on June 6th. Announced in December, the game promises a different take on Frictional’s trademark physics-based survival horror gameplay; it’ll boast semi-open environments and randomized elements, alongside the classic adrenaline rush of being hunted by spooky monsters.
