The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide

In our The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the zombies in the game — including the super-tough armored zombies.

The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide – How to Kill Zombies

You’ve probably come to our The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide to learn how to kill zombies. Here’s the good news: most zombies are terrifically easy to kill whether you’re using guns or melee weapons.

There are, however, a few special zombies in the game that you need to worry about, too. There are poison-spitting zombies and exploding bloated zombies, but those are easy enough to figure out. (Check out our list of all the zombies at the end of this The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide!) Some zombies, however, require a little more strategy — especially the big ones.

How to Kill Armored Zombies in The Last Stand: Aftermath

Armored zombies can be killed in one of two ways:

  1. Use your melee to break away their armor.
  2. Use explosives to blow them to bits.

How to Kill Big Zombies in The Last Stand: Aftermath

Big zombies (which I refer to as “Brute Zombies” in the list later on in this guide) are some of the toughest opponents you’ll have to face. You have two options for killing them:

  1. Shoot them with a lot of bullets and/or explosives.
  2. Melee them.

These big zombies can take out four chunks of your life bar with their melee attack, so engaging them in melee is a really bad idea.

How to Kill Big Armored Zombies in The Last Stand: Aftermath

Remember how I said meleeing the big zombies is a bad idea? Guess what: the people who make this game are devious and they put armor on these big guys. That really only gives you two options for fighting them:

  1. Hit them with a lot of explosives (typically three RPGs or five 40mm Grenades)
  2. Melee them.

If you don’t have explosives, unfortunately, you’re going to have to melee them. Let them charge into a wall (or throw a Stun Grenade) and beat away their armor. Once it’s gone, shoot them with a lot of bullets if you can spare them — you don’t want to risk getting into melee with these big guys. If there’s any one tip you’ll take away from this The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide, it should be this: fighting one of these big, armored brutes is going to take all of your focus. Get them away from any crowds or kill any smaller zombies around them — you’ll have a serious problem if you don’t.

List of Zombie Types in The Last Stand: Aftermath

Name Image Health Speed Special Ability Notes
Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Zombie Low Slow

Relatively harmless, even in large groups. Kill with melee where possible to conserve ammo.

Small Zombie The Last Stand Aftermath Zombies Guide - Small Zombie Low Fast   Walks slowly until it sees you, then it breaks into a sprint. Tends to swarm players. Can be killed with melee, but you have a good chance of getting hit from behind.
Fast Zombie The Last Stand Aftermath: Zombies Guide - Fast Zombie Low Fast   Walks slowly until it sees you, then it breaks into a sprint. Usually found in groups of 2-4. Goes down easy but catches up with you quickly.
Fat Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Fat Zombie Medium Slow/Fast   Typically slow and tough in earlier levels. Some variants can run.
Bloated Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Bloated Zombie Medium Fast Poison Explosion Walks slowly until it sees you, then it breaks into a sprint. Explodes into a poisonous gas cloud, causing the Poison effect. Ideally killed at range; if it gets close, wait for it to start the explosion animation and immediately roll out of the way to avoid the explosion. Keep in mind that the poison cloud lingers around for a while.
Soldier Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Soldier Zombie Low-Medium Fast   Typically found at military installations.
Armored Soldier Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Armored Soldier Zombie Medium * Slow Armored Invulnerable to most bullets until its armor is broken with melee attacks.
Brute Zombie / Big Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Brute Zombie Medium-High Slow * Stomp Attack
Charge Attack
Highly dangerous enemy that can take away 4+ chunks of health with two attacks. Very slow until it charges. Using melee is ill-advised — even if it’s stunned — due to this attack. Baiting a Brute Zombie into charging a solid object will stun it.
Miasma Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Miasma Zombie Low Fast   Walks slowly until it sees you, then it breaks into a sprint.
Leaper Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Leaper Zombie Medium Slow * Leap Attack Moves slowly, but has a long-range leap attack that can cause a lot of damage. Roll away from the leap and then follow up with several melee attacks or shots.
Claw Zombie The Last Stand Aftermath: Zombies Guide - Claw Zombie Medium Fast   Has a hard-hitting melee attack.
Poison Bloated Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Poison Bloated Zombie Medium Fast Poison Explosion A later-game variant of the Bloated Zombie. Will run up to you and explode.
SWAT Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - SWAT Zombie Medium * Fast Armored Invulnerable to most bullets until its armor is broken with melee attacks.
Spitter Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Spitter Zombie Medium Slow Poison Spit
Poison Cloud
Spits a green glob that leaves a poisonous cloud where it lands. This attack can also be used point-blank. Actively retreats from the player to take advantage of its ranged attack.
Underwater Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Underwater Zombie N/A N/A Drowning Grab Marked by bubbles floating on the water and does not appear to move from its spawn point. Will try to drag you underwater to drown you. Cannot be killed by any known means; it’s best to avoid this one.
Charred Zombie / Black Skeleton Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Charred Zombie Medium Fast   Usually found in a group that typically also includes 1 Burning Zombie. Nonetheless vulnerable to flames.
Burning Zombie / Fire Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Burning Zombie Medium Slow Fiery Defense
Death Explosion
Shoots out bits of flame when it’s hit. Explodes into flame and leaves fire on the ground for a short time after it dies. Usually found in a group that has around 4 Charred Zombies.
Armored Brute Zombie / Big Zombie The Last Stand: Aftermath Zombies Guide - Armored Brute Zombie HIgh Slow * Armored
Stomp Attack
Charge Attack
The Armored Brute Zombie is unequivocally the most dangerous zombie in the game. You have to melee it to strip away its armor; after that, you should fight it using the same methods as you would with the standard Brute Zombie: shoot a lot of bullets into it or stun it, melee it, and dodge out of its way.

There you have it, the complete Last Stand: Aftermath Zombie Guide – hopefully this information and breakdown helped you take down some of the harder ones.
