PS5 Has Sold 30 Million Units as Supply Constraints Ease

Today, during Sony’s CES press conference in Las Vegas, the house of PlayStation announced a new sales milestone for the PS5.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan stood on stage to reveal that the console has sold 30 million units to consumers worldwide. This is a sold-through figure, and not a “sold-in” figure representing shipments to retailers, which normally is revealed during Sony’s quarterly financial briefings.

Ryan also mentioned that PS5 supply finally improved toward the end of last year after a long period of shortages due to supply chain constraints and semiconductor scarcity. As a result, December 2022 was the “biggest month ever” for PS5 console sales.

According to Ryan, Sony “truly appreciates the support and patience of the PlayStation community” as the company managed “unprecedented demand” and the challenges of the past two years since the console launched in November 2019. He also added that everyone should have a “much easier time” finding PS5 at retail going forward.

He mentioned that with PS VR2’s launch around the corner blockbuster games like Final Fantasy XIV, Hogwarts Legacy, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 coming later this year, it’s “never been a more exciting time to be part of the PlayStation community.”

During the same conference,  the executive also announced news related to the upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset, on top of Project Leonardo, a brand new accessibility-focused controller for PlayStation.
